How HUPO Evolved

HUPO was officially launched on February 9, 2001, with a global advisory council comprising leading proteomics experts from academia, government, and industry. Over the first year, the council identified key challenges and initiatives for HUPO to address.

Since its inception, HUPO has received financial support from Genome Quebec, McGill University, the National Institutes of Health, and pharmaceutical partners, alongside substantial in-kind contributions from council members and research institutes worldwide.

Annual HUPO World Congress

HUPO initiatives are showcased each year at the HUPO World Congress, held on a three-year rotation across the Americas, Asia/Oceania, and Europe.

The HUPO Logo

The current HUPO logo was designed on July 24, 2001, during Prof. Sam Hanash’s first year as HUPO President. HUPO Secretary General Prof. Young-Ki Paik collaborated with Prof. Hyewon Sohn of Crosspoint International Branding and Design (Seoul, Korea) and her associate, Seoung Woo Hong, to create three logo options. The final design was selected by vote at KHUPO’s inaugural meeting in Seoul.

The logo features 8 blue dots inside the “P”, each representing a letter in the word proteome.

The same design approach inspired the HPP and C-HPP logos, launched in 2010, using the “P” as a recognizable symbol across HUPO projects.

3 proposed HUPO logos that were voted on by KHUPO members in 2001. The current logo (center) received the majority of votes and was officially adopted by HUPO.
